Why Archer Senior Living Keeps Twice the Caregivers the State Requires

Learn why we chose to exceed Michigan's staffing requirements by 100%, what it means for your loved one's daily care, and why we believe it makes all the difference.

When we founded Archer Senior Living, we had a choice to make about staffing. We could meet the state of Michigan's minimum caregiver requirements and operate like most other care homes, or we could invest in our residents by maintaining significantly more staff than the law demands. We chose the latter, and it has shaped everything about who we are.

We keep twice the number of caregivers the state of Michigan requires. That is not a tagline. It is a daily commitment that affects every aspect of life in our homes. And in this article, we want to explain exactly why we made that choice and what it means for the families who trust us with their loved ones.

The state's minimum staffing requirements exist for a reason. They ensure a basic level of safety and supervision for residents in licensed care homes. But basic and excellent are very different things. Meeting the minimum means residents are supervised. Exceeding it means residents are cared for, known, and valued as individuals.

In practical terms, our staffing ratio means that in a home with six residents, there are always enough caregivers to provide immediate, unhurried assistance. When a resident needs help getting dressed in the morning, someone is there right away. When medications need to be administered, it is done carefully and on schedule, without the pressure of a dozen other residents waiting.

This is not how it works in most care settings. In many large facilities, caregivers are responsible for 10, 12, or more residents at a time. They rush from room to room, doing their best but constantly running behind. Meals become mechanical. Personal interactions become brief. And the small but critical details get lost in the chaos.

Our caregivers do not experience that chaos. Because we staff at twice the required level, our team members are able to focus on providing thoughtful, personalized care. They are not burned out. They are not rushing. They have the bandwidth to be fully present with each resident, and that presence is what makes the difference between a place that provides care and a place that feels like home.

There is also a direct relationship between staffing ratios and safety outcomes. Research consistently shows that higher caregiver-to-resident ratios are associated with fewer falls, fewer medication errors, fewer incidents of neglect, and better overall health outcomes. For our residents at Maple Manor of Pinckney, located at 7119 Pinckney Rd, Pinckney, MI, and Maple Manor of Hamburg at 9090 Chilson Rd, Brighton, MI, this translates to a safer, healthier, and happier daily life.

Higher staffing also impacts something that is harder to measure but equally important: emotional wellbeing. Loneliness is a serious health risk for seniors. It is associated with depression, cognitive decline, and even increased mortality. In our homes, caregivers are companions as much as they are care providers.

We know that maintaining this level of staffing comes at a cost. It is the single largest line item in our budget. But it is also the single most important investment we make. We could cut staffing to the minimum, pocket the difference, and still maintain our license. But that is not who we are.

Families often ask us how we can afford to staff at this level. The answer is that we are small and intentional. We operate two AFC licensed homes with six all-private rooms each. We do not have the overhead of a large corporate facility. Every dollar we bring in goes back into our homes and our residents.

We also retain our caregivers at a much higher rate than the industry average. When staff are supported, valued, and not overworked, they stay. They build relationships with residents and families that last for years. That consistency is something you cannot buy with a bigger budget or a fancier building. It comes from culture, and our culture is defined by the decision to put residents first, always.

Our homes are located in the heart of Livingston County, Michigan, serving families from Pinckney, Brighton, Howell, Hamburg, and the surrounding communities. We are AFC licensed and inspected by the state, and we are proud of our record.
