Medication Management
Trained staff ensure every medication is administered accurately and on time, with careful tracking that reduces errors and keeps families informed.
Medication management is one of the most critical — and most overlooked — aspects of senior care. For many older adults, managing multiple prescriptions becomes increasingly complex and dangerous. Missed doses, double doses, drug interactions, and improper timing can lead to hospitalizations, falls, confusion, and even life-threatening emergencies. When families begin exploring care options for a loved one, understanding how a facility handles medications should be at the top of the list.
The statistics are sobering. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, adverse drug events cause approximately 1.3 million emergency department visits each year among older Americans. Many of these events are preventable with proper medication management. In large assisted living facilities with dozens or hundreds of residents, the sheer volume of medications being administered creates opportunities for error. One overworked aide managing medication passes for 30 or 40 residents is far more likely to make a mistake than a caregiver managing medications for just 6 people.
At Archer Senior Living, medication management is something we take extremely seriously. Our two AFC licensed homes — Maple Manor of Pinckney at 7119 Pinckney Rd, Pinckney, MI and Maple Manor of Hamburg at 9090 Chilson Rd, Brighton, MI — each serve only 6 residents in all-private rooms. This intimate setting means our trained caregivers can give each resident's medication regimen the focused attention it deserves.
Every resident's medications are documented, organized, and administered according to their physician's orders. We handle everything from ordering refills and coordinating with pharmacies to securely storing medications and maintaining detailed administration records. When a new medication is prescribed or a dosage changes, our team updates the care plan immediately and communicates the change to all caregivers on every shift.
One of the greatest advantages of a small AFC home is consistency. In large facilities, residents may see different aides every shift, and the person administering medications may not know the resident well. They may not notice that Mrs. Johnson seems more confused than usual after starting a new prescription, or that Mr. Williams has been refusing his evening pills for three days. In our 6-bed homes, caregivers notice these things because they know each resident intimately. They can identify subtle changes in behavior, appetite, or alertness that may signal a medication issue — and they can communicate those observations to families and physicians quickly.
We also maintain twice the caregiver-to-resident ratio that the state of Michigan requires. This is not just about having more hands on deck — it is about having more eyes, more attention, and more time to do things right. Medication passes are not rushed. Caregivers have time to sit with a resident who needs encouragement to take their pills, to crush medications for residents who have difficulty swallowing, and to double-check every detail before administering anything.
Families often ask us how they can be sure their loved one is actually receiving their medications correctly. Transparency is a core value at Archer Senior Living. We maintain detailed medication administration records that families can review. We communicate proactively when there are any changes, concerns, or issues. And because our homes are small and personal, families are always welcome to visit, ask questions, and be involved in their loved one's care.
Coordination with healthcare providers is another essential piece of medication management. Our team works closely with each resident's physicians, pharmacists, and specialists to ensure that medication regimens are reviewed regularly and adjusted as needed. We schedule and facilitate visits from physicians and nurses who come to the home, so residents do not have to endure the stress and risk of unnecessary trips to medical offices.
In Livingston County, Michigan, families have many options when it comes to senior care. But not all options are equal when it comes to something as important as medication safety. A large facility may have a beautiful lobby and impressive amenities, but if your loved one's medications are being managed by an overworked aide rushing through a cart of 40 pill cups, those amenities mean very little.
At Archer Senior Living, we believe that medication management is not just a task on a checklist — it is a responsibility we carry with the utmost care and attention. Every pill, every dose, every time. That is our commitment to the 6 residents in each of our homes and to the families who trust us with their loved one's wellbeing.
